Initial jobless claims

The number of people filing new unemployment insurance claims each week; the most timely labour market indicator available and a genuine leading indicator of recession.

Claims are administrative counts rather than survey estimates, published every Thursday for the week ending the previous Saturday. That combination of accuracy and speed is unique among macro data.

The weekly series is noisy, so the four-week moving average is the number to watch. Seasonal adjustment struggles around holidays and school breaks, and single-state distortions from storms or plant shutdowns are common, so check the unadjusted state detail before trading a surprise.

Example: the four-week average moves from 218,000 to 245,000 over six weeks. A sustained move above roughly 275,000 has historically coincided with the labour market genuinely turning, so the trend matters far more than any one print.
