Performance anxiety

Anxiety about executing well that interferes with executing well, strongest when the outcome is watched, reported, or deadlined.

The pattern is familiar from sport and music: the situations that matter most produce the arousal that most degrades fine judgement. Prop evaluations, a public call, a funded account near a limit, and trading in front of others all qualify.

The visible symptoms are hesitation, rushing, and a strange inability to follow rules you know well. Attention shifts from the task to how you are doing at the task, which is the mechanism behind choking in any domain.

The standard remedies transfer: rehearse under realistic conditions, reduce the stake until the situation is boring, narrow attention to the next concrete action rather than the outcome, and use a fixed routine so the body knows what to do while the mind is noisy.
