Risk factors

The section of a filing listing what could go wrong, from generic boilerplate to specific, newly added disclosures that carry real information.

Most of the section is legal protection and reads the same for every company in an industry. The value is in what changes: a risk factor added this year was added because someone concluded it now needed disclosing.

Comparing the list year over year takes minutes and regularly surfaces the customer concentration, supply dependency or litigation exposure that later explains a share price move.

Example: Northwind Tools adds a risk factor about dependence on a single battery cell supplier, and expands the product liability paragraph. Both predate the warranty charge taken nine months later.
